Thursday, 2nd August. Huang Jiapei shot an impressive 210 over three rounds at Foshan Golf Club to repeat his last year’s triumph by again winning the Group U18 section of the 2018 Guangdong Junior Golf Open and Foshan Open Qualifier. The 17-year-old junior from Zhongshan handled the hot and humid conditions with a cool head to finish 6 under par for the tournament, 2 shots ahead of runner up Kuang Yang. His win once again earns him a coveted spot in the Foshan Open in October, one of the key events on the European Challenge Tour and where he will compete against a top class international field that will include some of the world’s most talented young players who are starting out on their pro golf careers. Kuang Yang of Group U18, and Brandon Ma of Group U15 won the qualification for the Foshan Open Pro-Junior Tournament, and the great opportunity to compete against world famous golf players.

“It’s a huge bonus for me to get a start in the Foshan Open and compete against a top quality international field,” said Huang Jiapei. I played in it last year after my good luck to win the qualification for the 2017 Foshan Open. I learned a lot from the experience of competing against international talents. My main aim at the Foshan Open this year will be to make the halfway cut. If I can do that, I feel that I will have got my game up to a new higher level. I’m really looking forward to October!”

“It was wonderful to see some superb golf played by the juniors here at Foshan Golf Club this week,” said Julian Small, General Manager of Foshan Golf Club. “It was really encouraging to see how well the youngsters handled the challenging conditions and it’s clear that many have the potential to become top class players. It demonstrates to me that our own Junior Golf Development Programme is on the right track and, this year, our aim is to widen the attraction of the game among the youth of the area. In this, our members have been very supportive and, to show our gratitude, we will extend the period of Family Membership benefits for children of members from 21 to 26 years of age.”

Foshan Golf Club has earned a reputation of being one of the foremost and active in introducing youngsters to the game and helping them develop their talents. This week it helped with the organization of the Guangdong Junior Open (and Foshan Open qualifier) but there is much more that it does that isn’t widely known. Perhaps most importantly it is now the official junior golf training base for Guangdong Province. It has built up and supports the Foshan Junior Golf Team which plays regularly in tournaments in the region. It regularly conducts golf activities in local schools and for families. This not only includes techniques of the golf swing and generally nurturing talent but also golfing etiquette, that unique part of the sport which encourages honesty, integrity, self-discipline, respect for others and friendship.
