Guan hopes to celebrate 17th birthday with win at Foshan
2015-10-14 23:54:12

It is just over two years since a young teenager called Guan Tian-lang from Guangdong, became a global sensation by becoming the youngest player (at 14) ever to qualify for The Masters, arguably the most prestigious tournament in the world of golf. He also became to youngest player ever to get past the 36 holes cut there.

Now he’s turning his attention to winning the upcoming Foshan Open. Undaunted by the prodigious array of young talent from around the world who have entered, Guan feels he is ready for a win.
“I feel good and ready,” he said after a practice round at the Foshan course, designed by famous Australian course architect, Tony Cashmore. “I’m local so I will have home advantage. If I can get into a strong position early on in the tournament, I know I will get a lot of support from the fans and that will help me a lot.”

Having played in some of the world’s top professional events with some of the best players in the world, it’s difficult to imagine that Guan is still a junior golfer. At 16 years old, he has accumulated that vital experience so necessary in the intense and pressure packed world of professional tournament golf. He has also grown physically from the slender ‘kid’ who played at Augusta and is able to hit the ball just as far the top pros.

Guan is a fan of the course at Foshan.“I like it,” he said. “It’s a very good quality course, especially the greens which are excellent and I’m looking forward very much to playing in front of my home crowd. The week before Foshan Open, I will compete in Macau and that should help sharpen my game.”

With his 17th birthday on the 25th October, the final day of the Foshan Open, the hugely talented teenager is hoping he can give himself a very special birthday present – victory in the Foshan Open.

“That would be perfect!” he said with a grin.
