Strongest Field Yet Set To Make Course Record Tumble
2015-10-21 23:32:04

The course record at Foshan Golf Club is 65, but with higher prize money attracting Foshan Open’s strongest field yet, all the signs point to the record being broken this week.

In 2013, two players set the course record of 65 at the inaugural Foshan Open. Welshman Rhys Davies and Australian Scott Arnold took full advantage of the perfect weather conditions and with the ball running further than usual on the fairways, they managed to master the challenging layout designed by renowned Australian course architect, Tony Cashmore.

Last year the field was even stronger and the scores generally lower but, although three players equaled the course record, nobody managed to beat it. Perhaps the most exciting was from 20 year old Matthew Fitzpatrick of England who was ranked number one amateur in the world before turning professional last year. After three fairly uninspiring rounds, by his high standards, he was well off the lead. However, he showed just what a world-class player he is by storming round the course in 65. It wasn’t enough to overtake the eventual winner, Jason Palmer, but it clearly demonstrated that the young Englishman seems destined for a place among the elite in world golf.

Fitzpatrick proved it just last month by becoming the youngest winner on the European Tour with victory at the British Masters.

This year, the field at Foshan is even stronger with many of the top Chinese players entered. It all points to a very exciting week ahead and, if the weather conditions are good, there is a very strong likelihood that the course record will be broken.
