Ouyang and She Earn Dream Starts in the US$350,000 Foshan Open
2013-09-16 14:01:59

Sunday 15th September. In a day of wildly swinging fortunes, 13 year old Ouyang Tian-peng and 16 year old She Zi-han booked their places alongside some of the world’s brightest young golfing talent in next month’s Foshan Open, jointly sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour and China Golf Association. Ouyang slumped to a second round 79 but his two round total of 152 was still enough to see him finish at the top of the leaderboard. She added another 77 and his 154 total earned him the second qualifying spot, two shots ahead of Weng Jun-yu.

It was a day of complete contrast for Ouyang, regarded as one of Guangdong’s brightest golfing prospects. A double bogey at the third followed by a bogey at the seventh saw him reach the turn in 39, five shots worse than yesterday’s outward nine. Ouyang continued to falter on the back nine with a string of three bogeys in a row at the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. Another bogey at the 15th allowed his playing partner, She, to take a one shot lead but it was short lived when She triple bogeyed the 17th and Ouyang steadied himself to par the final three holes to regain the lead.

She played text book golf in replicating his first round 77. His only major blemish came at the 17th where he ran up a triple bogey seven after finding the right hand rough off his drive and then hooking his second into the water. Although third placed Weng Jun-yu closed the gap on She with a classy outward 37, he couldn’t keep the momentum going and came home in 39 for a 76 to finish two shots behind.

Lying in second place after the first round, Huan Cheng-si endured a disastrous final round only managing two pars on the outward nine. He started to come back strongly picking up two birdies in a row at the 15th and 16th only to drop well out of contention with a disastrous 14 at Foshan’s dangerous lakeside par five 18th.

It was a day of celebration for Mr. Jian Yong-jun, head of the Guangdong Golf Association, who presented the qualifying certificates to Ouyang and She, both Guangdong juniors, and underlined the province’s continued strength in Chinese junior golf.
