Two former Foshan Open players, Robert MacIntyre(2018 Runner-up) of Scotland and Tyrrell Hatton(2013 Runner-up) of England, battled through strong winds and rain to excel at the British Open in Royal Portrush last Sunday, both finishing in a tie for sixth place.

While most of the world’s top golfers struggled through the final day with ballooning scores in the sometimes brutal weather conditions, both MacIntyre and Hatton played sublimely to soar up the leaderboard with final round scores of 3-under 68 and 2-under par 69 respectively. The superiority of their final round performances is best illustrated with the huge leap up the leaderboard both made over the final 18 holes, Hatton from 23rd to sixth and MacIntyre from 29th also to sixth.

MacIntyre is best remembered at Foshan last October for the stunning eagle that he scored on the danger filled par 5 final hole to force a play-off. And the 22 year-old Scotsman similarly finished with a flourish at Royal Portrush on Sunday, sinking a long and tricky 20 feet putt and earning a roar of appreciation from the huge gallery.

“Holing that putt was definitely the highlight of the week,” said MacIntyre. “It made it a special week. You have putts when you’re a youngster pretending it’s for the Open Championship. Unfortunately my putt wasn’t for the Open but it definitely gave you a flavor of what can happen; it gets the hairs standing at the back of your neck. That’s what you play the game for.”

Hatton has become one of the most colourful characters in golf earning a reputation for letting his emotions run wild on the course. He has stated that he is trying to stay calmer but he understandably doesn’t want to completely douse the ‘fire’, which he feels is central to his competitiveness.

“I’m a passionate person and I try my best to win a tournament,” he said. “Occasionally that spills over, and I’m human. I’m going to make mistakes from time to time. Nobody’s perfect and everybody goes about their ways differently.”

With Hatton at 27 years of age and MacIntyre about 23, the future looks extremely bright for both of them. However MacIntyre added a touch of down-to-earth realism after his Open performance saying, “I just had to enjoy it. You never know how many of these moments you’re going to get.”

Congratulations to all Foshan Open players and hope you play well in the next event!
